MEMPHIS-Christian Brothers University senior forward
Jose Ferraz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) scored twice, but No. 19 Saint Leo eliminated the No. 13 Bucs 5-4 in penalty kicks after the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in double overtime Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Division II South Regional at Signaigo Field.
Ferraz opened the scoring for the second-seeded Bucs (14-3-1) in the 30th minute as he scored his 12th goal of the season on a penalty, and the Bucs maintained the lead through the remainder of the first half.
Just after halftime, the third-seeded Lions (10-3-4) answered with a goal of their own on a penalty in the 47th minute, as Alexander Racca scored his fourth goal of the year. They took their first lead of the day in the 64th minute when Racca sent a corner kick into the box, where Matthias Katerna headed it in for his fifth goal of the year.
The Bucs equalized in the 81st minute as
Brendan Bennett (Belfast, Northern Ireland/St. Mary's Christian Brothers Grammar School) sent a cross to the back post, and Ferraz headed it into the net for his 13th goal. Bennett nearly gave the Bucs a win in the last minute of regulation on a volley from beyond the 18-yard box, but Lion goalkeeper Manuel Schoenhuber made a diving save to send the game to extra time. Neither team put a shot on target in overtime, sending the match to penalties.
Nine of the 10 players in the shootout scored, but Schoenhuber made a save on the Bucs' third attempt and all five Lions found the net.
The Lions advance to face top-seeded Lynn next weekend in Young Harris, Ga.
CBU finishes the season 14-3-1.
