Bucs Pull Away From Toppers 92-58

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs shot 68 percent from three-point range, the second-best mark in school history for a game, as they pulled away to a 92-58 win over Blue Mountain Monday night at Canale Arena.

The Bucs (2-0) built a 36-20 first-half lead when Jordan Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) knocked down a three-pointer with 6:20 remaining in the half to cap a 12-2 run, but Blue Mountain trimmed the margin to 43-34 by halftime as they closed the half on a 9-2 run.

The Bucs exploded out of the gate in the second half, starting the half with a 17-4 run. Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored the first basket of the run, then Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) buried five straight three-pointers to give the Bucs a 60-38 advantage with 15:54 remaining in the half. CBU never allowed Blue Mountain closer than 19 points again and led by as many as 38 points in the final minutes.

Casey finished with 31 points, one off his career high, and he tied his own school record by knocking down 90 percent (9-of-10) of his three-pointers. His nine threes are also tied for second in school history for a game, as he went 9-of-10 in a win over Union Jan. 16. Pat Graham also made nine threes against North Alabama Feb. 7, 2013. The school record is 11, set by Tim Stock against Freed-Hardeman Feb. 15, 1988.

Fleming scored 18 points and dished out a career-high 15 assists, one off the school record of 16 set by Jeff Nelson against Lambuth Dec. 9, 1978.

Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) and Charlie Oswald (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) scored 11 each.

Shane Butler paced the Toppers, who counted the game as an exhibition contest, with 13 points, and Deaundre Smith scored 12.

For the game, the Bucs shot 62.5 percent (35-of-56) overall, including 68 percent (17-of-25) from three-point range. Their 17 made threes is tied for third-best in school history, behind the record 20 set against Williams Baptist Jan. 6, 2005. Their 68 percent clip from three-point range is second in school history, only behind the 72.2 percent (13-of-18) clip set against Ouachita Baptist Feb. 15, 2007.

BMC finished 46.8 percent (22-of-47) for the game, including 50 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range. The Toppers out-rebounded CBU 24-23, but the Bucs forced 21 turnovers while committing 10.

The Bucs return to action Tuesday, Nov. 25, as they host No. 10 Bellarmine at 7 p.m.
