Lady Bucs Win One of Three at UNA Invitational

Marie Joiner went 4-for-9 with three runs as the Lady Bucs won one of three games in the UNA Invitational Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 FLORENCE, Ala.-In a rare three-game day due to Friday's rainout, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs went 1-2 Saturday in the University of North Alabama Invitational, winning 6-3 over McKendree but losing 3-2 to Truman State and 12-2 to Trevecca Nazarene.

In the first game, the Lady Bucs (1-4) rapped out 11 hits, four in a three-run third inning. They fell behind in the first inning as McKendree (0-1) plated three runs on four hits, but they answered with four runs of their own in the top of the third. Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) sparked the rally with a one-out single, and Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) hit a double to move her up to third. Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) hit a sacrifice fly to score Hare, and Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) followed with a double to score Joiner. Steagall scored on a Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) single to knot the game at three.

The Lady Bucs took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) hit a leadoff single to left, and Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) doubled her home. Seward hit another RBI double with two out in the sixth to score Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS), who reached on an error. Joiner scored again in the seventh to set the final margin as she singled, moved to second on a Steagall single and scored on a Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) single.

Hare, Seward, Joiner and Steagall collected two hits each in the win, with Joiner scoring twice and Seward driving in two runs. Steagall also earned the win, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings.

In Saturday's second game, Truman State (2-0) won in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Whitney Richardson. In the top of the sixth, Gonzalez answered with a two-run homer of her own, to left field, to tie the game at 2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs used back-to-back one-out singles and a passed ball to set up a game-ending squeeze play as Nikki Moss brought in Alexis VanNostrand with the squeeze bunt.

Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the game as she also doubled in the first inning.

The Lady Bucs' legs gave out in the third game of the day as they gave up mulitple runs in all four innings of a 12-2 loss. CBU took an early lead with two runs in the first inning as Joiner singled, Gonzalez reached on an error and both scored on a Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) single with two out. Trevecca Nazarene (5-2) tied it with two runs in the bottom of the first on a walk and three singles, and they took the lead with two in the second on a walk and two errors. They extended the lead to 6-2 with two more in the fthird inning on three hits and a walk, and they put it away with a six-run fourth inning on four hits, two walks and two errors.

The Lady Bucs return to action next weekend as they open GSC play at Shorter. They play a doubleheader Saturday at noon, with a single game Sunday at noon. Their home opener is set for Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. against Harding.
