Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-After scoring just once in a 5-1 loss in game one, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs exploded for 12 runs to win 12-10 over Harding to salvage a split in Tuesday afternoon's home-opening doubleheader.
Coming into the second game, the Lady Bucs (2-8) had scored just 16 runs in their first nine games. They spotted Harding (10-5) a 7-0 lead as the Lady Bisons scored three in the first on two hits and an error, then four on five second-inning singles.
Then, in the bottom of the second, the Lady Bucs' bats woke up.
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) drew a walk, and
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on an error.
Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) followed with a one-out single to load the bases, but a strikeout kept the bases loaded with two out.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) hit an RBI single to put CBU on the board, then
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) hit an RBI single.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) smoked a two-run single up the middle, and a wild throw home brought Gracia home and sent Gonzalez to third. After a
Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) walk, Rosa-Ramon capped the inning with an RBI single to bring the Lady Bucs within a 7-6 margin.
CBU took the lead an inning later.
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) hit a leadoff single and scored on an
Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) triple to right. Joiner singled Hare home to give CBU an 8-7 lead, but it would be short-lived. Harding plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning on three singles and a double to take a 10-8 edge.
The Lady Bucs tied it back up at 10 in the bottom of the fourth. Sereika singled and walks to Adams and Canizaro loaded the bases. Seward hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the game. The Lady Bucs took the lead for good in the fifth inning. After Joiner worked a leadoff walk, Gracia reached on a two-base throwing error on her sacrifice bunt. HU intentionally walked Gonzalez to load the bases, and Sereika hit an RBI groundout. Rosa-Ramon was walked to load the bases again, and Canizaro hit an RBI single to short to bring Gracia home.
Adams earned the win, allowing three runs in six innings, allowing eight hits against one strikeout. She retired seven of the last eight Harding hitters. Gonzalez, Joiner, Canizaro and Seward collected two hits each. Joiner, Gracia and Adams scored twice each, and Joiner, Gonzalez and Seward drove in two runs each.
In the first game, five of the game's six runs were unearned after four scoreless frames to start the game. In the top of the fifth, Harding used three singles and an error to score twice. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Bucs cut the lead in half as Joiner reached on an error and scored when Gonzalez doubled off the center-field fence with one out. The Lady Bisons batted around in the seventh on two hit batters, a walk and two errors, scoring three runs to set the final margin at 5-1.
Sereika went 2-for-3 for the Lady Bucs in the game.
Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) allowed three unearned runs despite allowing one hit and one walk against three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host West Florida in their GSC home opener. A single game is set for 12 p.m. Sunday to complete the series.
