Argos Rally Past Lady Bucs 4-2 in Heartbreaker

Sammi Canizaro hit her first career home run, but the Lady Bucs lost 4-2 to West Florida Friday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-Playing in a mix of cold rain and sleet, visiting West Florida scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 4-2 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon at Bland Field.

The Argos (12-11, 3-3 GSC) took a lead in the second inning when Lauren Correia blasted a one-out solo homer to right-center. The Lady Bucs (2-9, 0-4) tied it in the bottom of the inning when Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) hit the first pitch of the inning over the left-field fence for her first career home run.

CBU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out rally. Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) worked a two-out walk and scored on a Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) single to left-center.

Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) held the Lady Bucs' 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh, when UWF plated three runs. Danielle Sanders singled to center and moved to second on an error, and Caroline Kaston doubled her home. Kaston stole third and scored on a wild throw to third base. After the error, UWF pinch-hitter Alex Marionakis homered to center to set the final margin at 4-2.

UWF pitcher Taylor Bailey struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to set the final margin. For the game, she held CBU to three hits and two walks against eight strikeouts.

Beekman allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out five.

The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday morning at 11 a.m. as they face UWF in a doubleheader.
