Steagall’s Big Day Leads Lady Bucs to Split

Kylie Steagall went 5-for-7 with two homers and seven RBI to lead the Lady Bucs to a split against West Florida Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-Freshman Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif., Steele Canyon HS) went 5-for-7 with two home runs and seven RBIs to lead the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to a doubleheader split with visiting West Florida Saturday, winning game two 5-0 after dropping a 10-6 decision in the opener.

In game two, the Lady Bucs (3-10, 1-5 GSC) scored the only run sophomore pitcher Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) would need in the second inning. Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) reached on an error, and Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) reached on a force play. Hare stole second and scored on an Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) double.

CBU put it out of reach in the fifth inning. Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) singled and stole second, moving to third on a groundout. Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on an error and stole second. Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) laid down a squeeze bunt to score Cowan, advancing to second as Story reached third. Steagall put it out of reach as she blasted a three-run homer to center to set the final margin.

For the game, seven Lady Bucs collected one hit each, with Steagall driving in a team-high three runs. Beekman (1-5) earned the win, blanking the Argos (13-12, 4-4) on four hits and two walks against four strikeouts.

In the first game, UWF used a pair of five-run innings as they exploded for a 10-6 win.

The Lady Bucs struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) led off with a single and moved to second on a Story sacrifice bunt. Steagall singled to left to bring her in.

The Argos took the lead for good in the third inning with five runs on five singles and an error, but the Lady Bucs cut the lead in half when Steagall hit a two-run homer to left-center after a leadoff single by Joiner.

UWF put it out of reach in the fifth inning with five runs on two singles, two errors and a three-run homer by Jessica Wilkinson.

CBU again answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Gonzalez led off with a walk, and Steagall singled to left. After a groundout, Canizaro hit a sacrifice fly to score Gonzalez and Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) singled Steagall home.

CBU set the final margin in the sixth inning when Steagall singled Joiner home after she had reached on an error.

Steagall finished the first game 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Joiner went 2-for-4 with three runs, and Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) went 2-for-4.

The Lady Bucs play their next seven games on the road. Wednesday they visit Trevecca Nazarene for a 2 p.m. doubleheader, and they visit Delta State for a GSC series next weekend. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., with a single game set for 1 p.m. Sunday. Their next home game is Saturday, March 15, as they host North Alabama for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
