Lady Miners Edge Lady Bucs 3-0, 12-11

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-Tuesday's doubleheader featured a pitchers' duel and a slugfest, but visiting Missouri S&T won both, defeating the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 3-0 in the opener and 12-11 in the nightcap at Bland Field.

In the opener, the Lady Miners (5-14) scored the only run they would need on a throwing error on a stolen base in the top of the first as they capitalized on a leadoff single. They scored another run in the second on a single and a triple, and they set the final margin in the top of the third with a run on an error and a double.

CBU (5-23) stranded five runners in the game. Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) went 3-for-3 in the game. Amanda Wade (Water Valley, Ky./Graves County HS) tossed three scoreless innings of relief for CBU.

The Lady Miners again scored in the top of the first in game two, plating a run on a walk, a steal and a double.

The Lady Bucs answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) launched a 3-1 pitch far beyond the right-field fence for her first homer of the season. Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on an error, and Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) followed with a double. A wild pitch scored Story, and Gonzalez stole home as part of a double-steal with pinch-runner Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) after Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) was hit by a pitch. Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) singled, and Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) drew a walk after Hare was picked off at third base. Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) hit a two-out single up the middle, and a dropped relay throw allowed pinch-runner Gabriela Nodine (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) and Canizaro to score, giving CBU a 5-1 lead.

The score remained 5-1 until the fourth inning. The Lady Miners scored once in the inning on a double, a walk and a single. The Lady Bucs answered again in the bottom of the inning. Joiner and Gonzalez worked walks, and Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) launched a three-run homer to left to give CBU an 8-2 lead.

The Lady Miners fought back into the game quickly, however. They scored five runs in the top of the fifth on five hits and two walks. CBU extended its lead to 9-7 when Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) hit a pinch-hit homer to left on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Lady Miners regained the lead in the top of the sixth with four runs on three singles, a double, a walk and an error. The Lady Bucs fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) led off with a triple to right, scoring on a Sereika single up the middle. Canizaro sacrificed Sereika to second, and an Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) single moved her to third. Sereika was tagged out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch, but Gracia took third on the play and scored on a Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) single up the middle to knot the game at 11.

The Lady Miners scored the game's final run in the top of the seventh as Cassie Rizzo singled and scored on a Shelby Michaelis double to right-center.

The Lady Bucs had one more rally in them in the bottom of the seventh. Story reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a two-out Adams single. Sereika drew a walk to load the bases, but a groundout ended the game.

Provence went 4-for-4 in the game for CBU, while Story, Adams, Sereika and Gracia collected two hits each. Steagall drove in three runs, and Joiner and Gonzalez scored two runs each. The Lady Bucs posted season-highs of 16 hits, three home runs and 28 total bases in the game.

CBU returns to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they host West Alabama in a GSC doubleheader. Sunday's single game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
