Tigers Sweep Lady Bucs

Marie Joiner went 5-for-6 with three RBI, but West Alabama swept the Lady Bucs 12-4 and 8-5 Sunday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-Visiting West Alabama scored runs in seven of 12 innings as they swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 12-4 and 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Bland Field.

In the opener, the Lady Bucs (5-25, 1-16 GSC) took an early lead with two runs in the second inning. Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) worked a leadof walk and stole second. After Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) singled her to third, Hare stole second and Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) followed with a two-out, two-run single to put CBU on the board.

UWA (20-16, 7-9) used three singles and a bases-loaded hit batter to cut the lead in half in the top of the third. In the fourth, UWA exploded for 10 runs on eight hits and four walks as they took an 11-2 lead

The Lady Bucs scored two more in the fourth inning. Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) led off with an infield single, and a Joiner single and a Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) walk loaded the bases with one out. Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run, and Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) hit a two-out RBI single to left to cut the deficit to 11-4.

UWA set the final margin in the fifth when Jordyn Whiddon hit a leadoff home run.

Joiner went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the game for CBU.

In game two UWA used five straight singles in the second inning to plate a pair of runs to take the lead. The Lady Bucs answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Canizaro singled and scored on an error after Hare doubled. Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) scored Hare with a sacrifice fly.

Whiddon gave UWA the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning when she hit a two-run homer. UWA extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the sixth with three runs on three hits, a hit batter and an error.

Steagall sparked a rally for the Lady Bucs in the bottom of the sixth when she launched a leadoff homer to left-center. After walks to Rosa-Ramon and Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS), Hare singled to load the bases with no outs. Adams grounded into a force play to score pinch-runner Lorin Raines (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS), and Joiner hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Canizaro, who pinch ran for Provence, to bring the Lady Bucs within a 7-5 margin.

UWA set the final margin with a run in the top of the seventh on a hit batter, a stolen base and a single.

Joiner and Hare went 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Bucs. Adams drove in two runs, and Canizaro scored twice.

The Tigers and Lady Bucs meet again tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. as they complete the three-game GSC series.
