Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs held the highest-scoring team in the NAIA to just one run in two games as they swept a doubleheader from visiting Talladega College, winning the opener 8-0 and claiming a 4-1 win in game two.
In the opener, starting pitcher
Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) gave herself all the run support she would need in the bottom of the first inning.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) led off with a single and moved to second on an
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Joiner scored on a single to left from Steagall, giving CBU (9-29) a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bucs doubled their lead in the fourth inning.
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) hit a two-out single to center and scored when
Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) doubled to right.
Steagal helped her own cause again in the fifth inning as she doubled in Joiner again. Joiner led the inning off by reaching on an error, and a pair of groundouts moved her to third before Steagall's double.
CBU put it out of reach in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) singled to right and stole second, moving to third when Canizaro doubled to left-center.
Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) hit a grounder to second base, but Talladega (27-15) threw home unsuccessfully trying to tag Hare out at the plate. After Cowan stole second, Joiner hit an RBI groundout to plate Canizaro and send Cowan to third.
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) singled Cowan home, and she scored on a
Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) double. Steagall, fittingly, ended the game with an RBI single to center, scoring Provence to give CBU the 8-0 win.
Steagall went 3-for-4 with three RBI at the plate, and she tossed a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts against one walk, improving her record to 2-3. Canizaro went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Joiner also scored twice.
Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) was also 2-for-3.
In game two, the Lady Bucs again struck first, in the bottom of the second inning. Steagall singled, and pinch-runner
Lorin Raines (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS) moved up to third on a pair of groundouts. Gracia scored her with an infield single to give CBU a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bucs took advantage of an error to score in the bottom of the third. Cowan and Joiner singled to start the inning, but Cowan was caught stealing on a double-steal attempt.
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) reached on an error, allowing Joiner to score from second.
Hare scored again for the Lady Bucs in the bottom of the fourth as she hit a one-out single and scored on a Canizaro double to right-center.
Steagall capped CBU's scoring in the fifth.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) singled to left and moved to third on a Rosa-Ramon double. Steagall hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring her home.
The Tornadoes scored a run on two singles and a hit batter in the top of the seventh to set the final margin.
Joiner and Hare each went 2-for-3 in the game for CBU.
Amanda Wade (Water Valley, Ky./Graves County HS) earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits as she went the distance with four strikeouts.
Talladega entered the doubleheader averaging 9.5 runs per game, and they lead the nation in the NAIA in seven offensive categories.
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they visit No. 9 Alabama-Huntsville. Their next home game is Friday, April 18, as they host West Georgia for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
