VALDOSTA, Ga.-Host Valdosta State scored two goals in the first half and held on for a 2-1 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.
VSU (1-3, 1-0 GSC) struck first in the eighth minute as Margaret Stauffer scored after Deysla Reyes split a pair of CBU defenders with her header. In the 43rd minute, VSU's Leanne Bishop curled a long shot into the top of the net to extend their lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Lady Bucs (4-1, 0-1) halved the lead in the 58th minute when
Camilla Rodrigues (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/American School) found the net on a penalty kick, scoring her third goal of the season. Rodrigues nearly scored an equalizer in the 61st minute, but VSU goalkeeper Olivia Mills made a diving save and CBU was unable to put another shot on target.
For the game, VSU out-shot the Lady Bucs 7-6, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Robyn Wade (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) made four saves for CBU.
The Lady Bucs return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. as they visit West Georgia. Their next home game is Friday night, Oct. 3, as they host Alabama-Huntsville at 5 p.m.
