Blazers Edge Lady Bucs 2-1

VALDOSTA, Ga.-Host Valdosta State scored two goals in the first half and held on for a 2-1 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.

VSU (1-3, 1-0 GSC) struck first in the eighth minute as Margaret Stauffer scored after Deysla Reyes split a pair of CBU defenders with her header. In the 43rd minute, VSU's Leanne Bishop curled a long shot into the top of the net to extend their lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Lady Bucs (4-1, 0-1) halved the lead in the 58th minute when Camilla Rodrigues (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/American School) found the net on a penalty kick, scoring her third goal of the season. Rodrigues nearly scored an equalizer in the 61st minute, but VSU goalkeeper Olivia Mills made a diving save and CBU was unable to put another shot on target.

For the game, VSU out-shot the Lady Bucs 7-6, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Robyn Wade (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) made four saves for CBU.
