VALDOSTA, Ga.-Host Valdosta State won a four-set match over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers (6-2, 3-2 GSC) won the first set 25-17 and appeared to have the match well in hand as they jumped to a 7-1 lead in the second set. The Lady Bucs (3-7, 2-4) rallied with seven straight points to take a 9-8 lead, and neither team would lead by more than two points again. VSU scored the last two points, however, to break a 23-23 tie and win the set 25-23 and take control of the match. CBU hit .357 in the third set, however, as they survived a nip-and-tuck set featuring no leads of more than three points, winning 26-24 to prolong the match. The Blazers jumped to an 8-3 lead in the fourth set and went on to win 25-15 and clinch the match.
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) paced the Lady Bucs' offense with 12 kills, hitting .478, while
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added 12 kills and a team-high 13 digs.
Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) tacked on nine kills and 11 digs, while
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) collected 47 assists, eight digs and six kills.
Destiny Berry, Lea Jaklen and Jenna Kirkwood led VSU with 16 kills each, and Ashley Lala notched a match-high 18 digs. Jessica Codato dished out 57 assists.
The Lady Bucs hit the road again Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Mississippi College. Their next home match is Friday night at 6 p.m. as they host Trevecca Nazarene.
