MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs picked up their second consecutive win Friday night at Canale Arena with a three-set sweep of visiting Trevecca Nazarene.
In the first set, neither team could gain separation, as CBU (5-7) led by four points twice but the Trojans (8-4) quickly cut into the lead and took one of their own as late as 20-19. But the Lady Bucs used an
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) kill and a double-block by
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) and
Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) to score the final two points and win the set 27-25. In the second set, the Lady Bucs jumped to a quick 10-3 lead they never relinquished, winning the set 25-17. In the third set it was Trevecca who started strong, with the first four points. But the Lady Bucs used an 11-2 burst to turn a 7-5 deficit into a 16-9 lead, holding on to win 25-19 and complete the sweep.
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) pounded 14 kills with four blocks, hitting .360 for the Lady Bucs. Gillis had 11 kills to go with match-bests of 14 digs and four aces, while
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) tacked on eight kills and 11 digs. Gruse notched 30 assists and three blocks in two sets, while
Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) collected 10 assists in one set.
Delaney Hearne led TNU with 10 kills. Loren Bennett collected 28 assists, and Katelyn Atkinson added 11 digs.
The Lady Bucs return to GSC play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Union.
