MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of matches on the first day of their 2014 season, sweeping Alderson Broaddus Friday morning but dropping a four-setter to Drury Friday night in the CBU Invitational at Canale Arena.
The Lady Bucs (1-1) opened their season with a three-set win over Alderson Broaddus, winning 25-19 and 25-21 to take control of the match, then putting it away with a 25-13 win in the third set.
Freshman outside hitter
Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) notched a team-high 12 kills to go with nine digs, four aces and two blocks to lead the way for the Lady Bucs. Junior
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) and sophomore
Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) led the way with 14 digs each, while senior setter
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) dished out 22 assists.
Megan Christman led the Battlers (0-1) with seven kills. Kayla Peterson added 15 assists, and Caitlin Cain garnered eight digs.
In the nightcap, it was Drury (2-0) who jumped to an early lead, winning the first two sets 25-20 and 25-18. CBU scored eight of the last 10 points to take a 25-20 victory in the third set, but the Panthers won the fourth set 25-9 to claim the match.
Gillis led theLady Bucs with 12 kills and 12 digs, and senior right-side hitter
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) added 12 digs to her 11 kills. Wong tacked on a dozen digs of her own, while Gruse logged 32 assists to go with 11 digs.
Sara Borneman led Drury with 11 kills, while Brooke Antonen had 34 assists and five aces. BJ Specht collected a match-high 17 digs.
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow for the second day of the CBU Invitational. The Lady Bucs take on Lindenwood at 9 a.m. before wrapping up the CBU Invitational against Harding at 7 p.m.
