FLORENCE, Ala.-Host North Alabama outscored the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 19-2 over the final 7:36 as they rallied for a 53-46 win after CBU had led for most of the game.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Lady Bucs (5-10, 3-6 GSC) used an 8-0 run late in the first half to open a 24-19 lead on a
Mikaela Blissett (Sikeston, Mo./Scott County Central HS) layup with 2:07 remaining in the half. A 7-0 burst early in the second half, capped by a fastbreak layup by
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS), gave them a 37-26 edge with 16:01 remaining.
After the Lions (8-4, 5-3) trimmed the CBU lead to four, a 7-1 spurt gave CBU a 44-34 lead on a pair of
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) free throws with 7:46 remaining. From there, however, it was all UNA. The Lions scored on their next six possessions, with the 13-0 run giving them a 47-44 lead on a Mekena Randle fastbreak layup with 4:03 remaining. Neither team would score again until a
Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) layup brought the Lady Bucs back within a point at 47-46 with 1:35 remaining, but UNA answered with a Keke Gunter three-point play and made three of four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
Ridgell led the Lady Bucs with 16 points and three steals as she matched her career-high with 13 rebounds.
Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) scored 16 to go with four rebounds, and Banks dished out a career-best seven assists with six rebounds and four points.
Randle led the Lions with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Jennifer Towne tacked on 13 with three steals.
The Lady Bucs held UNA to 28.3 percent (17-of-60) from the floor while shooting 33.9 percent (21-of-62), but UNA was 14-of-21 (66.7 percent) at the free throw line to CBU's 2-of-2. The Lady Bucs out-rebounded UNA 41-39, but UNA held a 13-11 edge in offensive boards and forced 20 CBU turnovers while committing 12.
The Lady Bucs return to action Monday night at 5 p.m. as they host Alabama-Huntsville.
