Lady Chargers Edge Lady Bucs 51-48

MEMPHIS-After clawing their way out of a 15-point first-half hole, the Christian Brothers University lady Bucs went cold over the final five minutes as they lost 51-48 to Alabama-Huntsville Monday night at Canale Arena.

After CBU (5-11, 3-7 GSC) struck first with a pair of free throws, the Lady Chargers (8-8, 5-5) went on a 23-6 run, taking a 23-8 lead on a Dina Saunders triple with 7:12 remaining in the first half. The Lady Bucs steadily chipped away at the lead, first with a 7-0 burst that brought them within 23-15 on a Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) jumper with 4:31 remaining in the half. Back-to-back Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) three-pointers to end the first half brought them within a 29-26 deficit.

Luckett completed the comeback midway through the second half, knocking down a jumper to give them a 37-36 lead with 11:13 remaining. Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) gave the Lady Bucs their final lead when she scored a layup to take a 43-41 lead with 5:58 remaining in the game. UAH answered with a 10-2 run, regaining the lead as CBU went just 1-of-7 with a turnover on their next eight possessions.

UAH appeared to have the game salted away when Josi Saunders sank a pair of free throws to take a 51-45 lead with 26 seconds remaining. Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) sank a three-pointer with five seconds left, and UAH committed a travel while catching the inbounds pass with two seconds remaining, giving CBU the ball on the baseline down 51-48, but they were unable to inbound the ball ahead of the five-second count and UAH ran out the clock on the victory.

Luckett scored 12 points with six rebounds, both team-highs, while Banks and Pugh added 10 points each. Lee scored eight points with a team season-high seven steals, tied for seventh-most in a game in school history.

Chandler Elder paced the Lady Chargers with 14 points, and Dina Saunders scored 11.

The Lady Bucs shot just 30.4 percent (17-of-56) to the Lady Chargers' 56.3 percent (18-of-32), but CBU forced a season-high 31 turnovers, UAH's highest turnover total since 2009. The Lady Bucs committed 14 turnovers, but UAH held a 35-22 edge on the boards.

The Lady Bucs return to action Thursday night at 6 p.m. as they visit Union for their final game of the first half of the GSC schedule. Their next home game is Thursday, Jan. 22, as they host Shorter at 5 p.m.
