JACKSON, Tenn.-After 23 minutes of back-and-forth basketball, first-place Union went on a 28-5 run spanning the middle 12 minutes of the second half to pull away from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 68-49 Thursday night.
The Lady Bucs (5-12, 3-8 GSC) jumped to a quick 6-2 lead to start the game, and neither team led by more than six points in a first half that saw three ties and six lead changes.
After
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) sank a three-pointer to bring the Lady Bucs within a 36-32 margin with 17:07 remaining, the Lady Bulldogs (13-2, 9-2) exploded for a 28-5 run, holding CBU to just 2-of-19 shooting during the stretch. By the time Kelsey Risner capped the run with a three-pointer with 4:24 remaining, the Union lead had grown to 64-37.
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 19 points, and
Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) added 11.
DeAnna Thompson led the Lady Bulldogs with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Risner tacked on 15 with seven rebounds.
Union shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) to the Lady Bucs' 32.2 percent (19-of-59) overall, but the Lady Bulldogs shined from three-point range, shooting 42.3 percent (11-of-26) to CBU's 27.3 percent (3-of-11). Union out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 39-34, but CBU had a 9-7 edge in offensive rebounds and forced seven Union turnovers while committing just six.
The Lady Bucs return home Thursday night at 5 p.m. as they open the second half of the GSC schedule by hosting Shorter.
