CLINTON, Miss.-After a scoreless drought of over five minutes down the stretch, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs scored six points in 20 seconds as they rallied for a 54-52 win over Mississippi College Thursday night.
CBU (6-14, 4-10 GSC) used back-to-back baskets from
Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) and
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) to tie the game at 48 with 5:38 remaining, and neither team would score for nearly five minutes before the Lady Choctaws (8-10, 4-10) regained the lead on a Kristen Sampson bucket with 55 seconds to go. Allie Hill sank a pair of free throws to lift them to a 52-48 lead with 40 seconds remaining.
Erin Wilson (Memphis, Tenn./Overton HS) scored a three-point play on a putback with 20 seconds remaining to bring the Lady Bucs within one, and the CBU defense forced a turnover on the ensuing possession.
Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) buried the game-winning triple, her fifth of the night, with 1.3 seconds remaining to give CBU the victory.
MC threatened to pull away several times early in the game. After CBU scored first with a Lee triple, MC scored the next eight to take the lead for the rest of the half. The Lady Choctaws built their lead to nine points when Sampson sank a pair of free throws with 2:47 remaining in the half to give them a 27-18 lead.
The Lady Bucs fought back into the game with a 14-3 run bridging the halftime break, capped by a pair of Pugh free throws with 16:17 remaining to give CBU a 32-30 lead. The lead was short-lived, as MC answered with a quick run to regain the advantage heading into the final minutes. Lady Bucs only led for 1:25 in the game, but they escaped with the victory.
Pugh led the Lady Bucs with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Lee scored 15 and tied her career-high with five three-pointers. Ridgell added 14.
Sampson and Ashley Minor led the Lady Choctaws with 10 points each.
The Lady Bucs shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) for the game to MC's 37.0 percent (17-of-46). The Lady Choctaws out-rebounded them 35-30, including a 9-7 edge in offensive rebounds, but they committed 16 turnovers to CBU's 15.
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they visit Delta State. Their next home game is Thursday, Feb. 12, when they host West Florida at 5 p.m.
