VALDOSTA, Ga.-Christian Brothers University freshman guard
Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio, La Salle HS) buried a contested three-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Bucs to a 77-74 double-overtime win at Valdosta State Saturday night.
Early on, the Blazers (7-6, 2-5 GSC) threatened to pull away, as a James Spencer jumper gave them a 27-15 lead with 4:07 remaining in the first half, but the Bucs (7-4, 4-3) clawed back into the game quickly.
A
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) triple sparked what became a 19-6 answer that
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) capped with a three-pointer giving the Bucs a 34-33 lead with 19:07 remaining in regulation. From there, neither team could pull away again as neither team led by more than four points again in regulation.
The Bucs rallied in the final seconds twice to extend the game. In regulation, Casey found
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) for a layup to tie the game at 62 with 18 seconds remaining, and VSU's shot at the buzzer missed. In the first extra frame, a Larkin three and a Sall jumper gave the Bucs a quick 67-62 edge with 4:06 to play, but VSU regained the lead with an 8-1 burst capped by a Spencer basket that gave them a 70-68 edge with 1:35 remaining. Casey answered with a jumper to tie with 1:04 to play, and both teams failed to score on their final possessions.
In the second overtime, the Blazers struck first with a Spencer jumper, but
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) answered with a putback slam to tie the game with 3:31 left, and Sall backed his man down for a go-ahead layup with 43 seconds remaining. VSU tied the game at 74 on a Colin Cook tip-in with eight seconds to play, setting up Larkin's game-winner from the right wing. In all, the game saw 15 ties and 12 lead changes.
Sall and Casey led the Bucs with 21 each. Casey matched his career-high with 10 rebounds, while Sall grabbed eight. Fleming scored 15 with seven rebounds while playing all 50 minutes. Larkin finished with nine, and Hildreth scored eight with nine boards, two blocks and two steals.
The Bucs finished 47.5 percent (29-of-61) for the game to the Blazers' 42.9 percent (30-of-70). CBU out-rebounded Valdosta 43-36, but they committed 16 turnovers to the Blazers' nine.
