Lady Bucs Edge Valdosta 48-47

VALDOSTA, Ga.-Christian Brothers University senior guard Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn., White Station HS) collected a steal and a free throw to break a tie score with five seconds remaining and lift the Lady Bucs to a 48-47 win at Valdosta State Saturday night.

The Lady Bucs (5-8, 3-4 GSC) started the game with a 12-4 run capped by a Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) layup with 10:31 remaining in the half, and the Lady Bucs led throughout the opening period, taking a 28-21 edge as Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) sank a triple at the buzzer.

VSU (8-5, 4-3) fought back into the game early in the second half, tying the game at 31 when Rashaundra Owens capped an 8-0 run with a pair of free throws with 15:46 remaining, and neither team led by more than four points again. The Lady Blazers held a 47-43 edge after two Maggie Davis free throws with 2:40 remaining, but the Lady Bucs cut the deficit in half with a pair of Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) free throws 10 seconds later. Ridgell sank two free throws to tie the game at 47 with 1:26 remaining, setting up a dramatic finish.

Pugh blocked a VSU shot with 1:00 remaining, but CBU missed a pair of shots on the ensuing possession and VSU regained possession with 35 seconds to play. As the shot clock ran down, Ridgell picked Maylissa Johnson's pocket and drew a foul, sending her to the line with five seconds remaining for a chance to win the game. She made the front end of the one-and-one, and after she missed the second, VSU missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

Ridgell logged game-highs of 17 points and four steals, while Pugh scored 13 with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Luckett scored six and hauled in a career-high 12 rebounds for the Lady Bucs.

Maggie Davis led VSU with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Bucs shot 40 percent (18-of-45) for the game while holding VSU to just 26.7 percent (12-of-45), their lowest shooting percentage since Jan. 21, 2008. VSU nearly overcame their cold night from the field by shooting 74.2 percent (23-of-31) at the charity stripe, where the Lady Bucs were 62.5 percent (10-of-16). VSU out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 38-29, including a 16-6 lead in offensive rebounds, but the Lady Bucs forced 19 VSU turnovers while committing 17.

The Lady Bucs return to action Monday night at 5 p.m. as they visit West Florida. Their next home game is Monday, Jan. 12, as they host Alabama-Huntsville at 5 p.m.
