PENSACOLA, Fla.-Host West Florida remained in first place in the Gulf South Conference as they defeated the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 64-53 Monday night.
The Lady Bucs (5-9, 3-5 GSC) led for most of the first half, taking an early edge with an 8-2 burst capped by two
Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) free throws that gave them a 10-4 lead with 14:57 remaining in the half. An 8-3 spurt later in the half lifted them to a 20-11 lead, their largest of the night, on a
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) layup with 10:26 remaining in the half.
From there, however, the Argos (10-2, 7-1 GSC) dominated the game, answering immediately with a 12-2 run that gave them a 23-22 lead with 4:33 remaining in the half. The Argos took the lead for good early in the second half, which they opened with a 15-3 run capped by a Breanna Williams triple, putting UWF ahead 43-33 with 12:26 remaining. CBU would never come closer than six points again.
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 21 points. Lee scored 15, and Banks added 14.
Williams led the Argos with 19 points. Jasmine Wigfall tacked on 18, and Toni Brewer scored 10.
The Lady Bucs shot 40 percent (22-of-55) for the game to the Argos' 37.7 percent (23-of-61). UWF held a commanding 46-31 edge in rebounds, including a 14-3 lead in offensive boards, and they forced 16 CBU turnovers while committing 13.
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they visit North Alabama. Their next home game is Monday night when they host Alabama-Huntsville at 5 p.m.
