Lady Bucs Clinch GSC Tourney With 2-1 Win

MEMPHIS-An 84th-minute game-winning goal by junior midfielder Ingrid Mello (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, American School) lifted the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to a 2-1 victory and the No. 6 seed in next week's Gulf South Conference Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (10-6-1, 6-5-1 GSC) struck first in the 20th minute. Alex Swanson (Memphis, Tenn./Arlington HS) fed a cross to Mariana Tonelli (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/American School), who celebrated her Senior Day with her sixth goal of the season.
• Union (4-13-1, 4-7-1) equalized in the 48th minute as Hannah Hilburn scored off a Honeye Heydari cross.
• The Lady Bucs scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute after Lauren Magdefrau (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons HS) drew a foul just outside the left edge of the 18-yard box. After Camilla Rodrigues (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/American School) sent a cross past the back post, Sydney Piper (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) tracked down the loose ball and crossed it back into the box for Mello, who headed the ball into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season

KEY STATS:
• The Lady Bucs out-shot Union 13-1 for the game, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs will be the sixth seed in the GSC Tournament, and they will hit the road Tuesday to play in the quarterfinals. Lee, North Alabama, West Alabama, West Florida and West Georgia have also clinched berths, and depending on results Saturday and Sunday, CBU could face any of the five. The top seed, which will either be Lee or North Alabama, will host the semifinals Friday and the GSC championship Sunday. Full pairings, as well as CBU's kickoff time for Tuesday, will be announced when the field is set.
