Hot Start Carries Bucs to 79-61 Win

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs out-scored visiting Trevecca Nazarene 28-8 over the first 10:14 Thursday afternoon and never allowed the Trojans closer than nine points again as they rolled to a 79-61 win in their final non-conference game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs (6-6) seized control with a 10-0 burst, with five points each by Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) and Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS), capped by a Larkin bucket that gave them an 11-3 edge with 16:33 remaining.
• CBU followed with a 17-0 run where they blew the game open. Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) sparked the run. By the time Dieball capped it with a pair of free throws, the Bucs led 28-8 with 9:46 remaining in the first half. During the 5:50 run, the Bucs held Trevecca (4-10) to 0-for-7 shooting with four turnovers.
• The Trojans used a 14-2 run to pull within 36-27 on a Byron Sanford three-point play with 2:01 remaining in the half, but Larkin answered with back-to-back layups and the Bucs never allowed Trevecca within single digits again, leading by as many as 22 points in the second half.

KEY STATS:
• Dieball scored a career-high 27 points with six rebounds and six assists, also tying his career-high in assists. He was 9-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and he was 6-of-7 at the charity stripe.
• Larkin scored 23 points and matched his career-high with seven rebounds, adding three assists. He shot 10-of-16 overall, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and played 38 minutes with no turnovers.
• Hildreth scored 15 points with nine rebounds, and he tied his career-high with five blocks, matching a mark he previously tied in November's win at Trevecca.
• The Bucs shot 50 percent (29-of-58) for the game, including 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc.
• Trevecca shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) overall and 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from three-point range.
• CBU out-rebounded the Trojans 42-28, including an 11-8 edge in offensive boards. The Bucs committed 14 turnovers to the Trojans' 12.

COACH NIENABER'S THOUGHTS:
"We have won games with our defense. There's some high school coaches in Cincinnati laughing right now if they're listening. But we've played good man to man defense. We're getting stops and we're getting good looks."

"We seem to handle the pressure pretty well when the games are close but when we're ahead we can get a little sloppy."

"Adam Dieball played an amazing game, and Jeff Larkin played one of his best games of the year. When your point guard and your five play that well and they pass the ball."

"Offensively we got more backdoors tonight than we have in a while. One thing that helped us keep it double digits in the first half when they were pressing us, we got some layups."

"With Jeff, less is more sometimes. When he's not trying to force things that aren't there. He let the game come to him. He hasn't shot as well this year as he did last year, I think at times he's trying to do too much."

"Tyler's really struggling with his shot. Normally in the Princeton offense when you have a 2-guard struggling with his shot, you're looking to get him out pretty quick. But he's just doing so many things. Cody's the same way. Both of those guys, what they did defensively is why they're in the game. They're not traditional 2-3 guys for us in the Princeton offense, so it's been an adjustment for us."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs return to GSC play Saturday night at 7 p.m. as they host Valdosta State.
