MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs used a strong second half to pull away from West Florida for a 70-52 win and clinch a berth in next month's Gulf South Conference Tournament.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw five ties and nine lead changes, the Bucs (13-9, 10-8 GSC) seized control for good with a 7-0 burst early in the second half, taking a 36-29 lead on a
Charlie Oswald (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) three with 18:06 remaining in the half. A 10-2 run stretched the lead to 51-37 on a pair of
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) free throws with 12:46 remaining, and the Argos never came closer than 12 points again.
Sall paced the Bucs with 19 points and 15 rebounds, and
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored 11 with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored all of his 15 points in the second half.
Deangelo Legrier led the Argos with 16 points, and Tyler Funk scored 13 with eight rebounds.
The Bucs shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) to UWF's 38.5 percent (20-of-52). The Bucs held a 36-32 edge on the boards, including a 12-10 lead in offensive rebounds, and they forced 13 UWF turnovers while committing just seven.
With the win, and with Union's win over Valdosta State Thursday night, the eight-team field for the GSC Tournament is set, with four games remaining. West Georgia, Alabama-Huntsville, West Alabama, Shorter, Union, Delta State and North Alabama will join CBU in the GSC Tournament. The quarterfinals will be hosted by the higher seeds Tuesday night, March 3, with the semifinals and finals set for the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University in Homewood, Ala., March 6-7.
The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they host Valdosta State.
