MEMPHIS-Visiting Valdosta State outscored the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 28-12 over the final 14 minutes as they rallied for a 59-52 win Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.
After spotting VSU (12-13, 8-11) the game's first four points, the Lady Bucs (7-18, 5-14 GSC) seized control early with a 10-0 run capped by a
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) triple with 12:54 remaining in the half. Back-to-back threes by
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) and
Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) late in the first half gave CBU a 29-18 lead with 1:17 remaining in the half, and CBU built its largest lead of the game when Banks sank another triple on the first play of the second half, putting the Lady Bucs ahead 33-20.
VSU slowly cut into the lead, closing within a 38-31 margin on back-to-back Maylisa Johnson layups with 15:40 remaining. A 12-2 burst put them back in front 43-42 on another Johnson layup with 6:25 remaining, and VSU took the lead for good at 48-46 when Maggie Davis scored a layup with 3:41 remaining, and CBU never came closer than four points in the final two minutes.
Ridgell scored 24 points, bringing her within 19 points of head coach Sarah Condra (1999-04) on the school's career scoring list. Ridgell has 1,487 points, while Condra holds the school record with 1,506. She also grabbed nine rebounds with a pair of steals.
Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) scored nine points with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Pugh now has 110 career blocked shots, ranking her third in school history. Her 47 blocks this season ranks fifth in school history, 10 behind the record set by Amber Williams in 2011-12. Banks scored 11 points with four assists.
Davis paced the Lady Blazers with 18 points, and Jordan Waugh grabbed 11 rebounds. Johnson scored eight points with a game-high nine assists.
For the game, VSU shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) to the Lady Bucs' 32.7 percent (18-of-55). CBU held a 36-34 edge on the boards, including a 9-5 lead in offensive rebounds, but they committed 15 turnovers to the Lady Blazers' 12.
The Lady Bucs hit the road for the final time this season Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. when they visit Alabama-Huntsville. Their next home game is Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host North Alabama.
