HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-Despite squandering a 14-point second-half lead, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied for a 53-50 overtime win at Alabama-Huntsville Thursday night to keep their Gulf South Conference Tournament hopes alive.
The Lady Bucs (8-18, 6-14 GSC) took control with an 11-0 run early, capped by a
Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) triple that gave them an 11-2 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, and they never allowed UAH (11-15, 8-12) closer than four points in the opening half. CBU stretched its lead to 31-17 with 17:54 remaining in the game when
Erin Wilson (Memphis, Tenn./Overton HS) capped a 7-0 burst with a jumper.
UAH answered with a 17-1 run to regain the lead on an Alysse Bishop three-pointer with 10:01 remaining in the half, giving UAH a 36-34 edge, and neither team would lead by more than four points again in regulation, with the game going to overtime tied at 45.
CBU never trailed in overtime, opening it with a 6-1 burst capped by a pair of Luckett free throws that gave them a 51-46 lead with 3:17 remaining. UAH scored four straight to close within 51-50 on two Shannon Steinert free throws with 1:03 to play, but CBU shut the Lady Chargers out on their last two possessions and
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) sank two free throws to set the final margin.
Pugh scored a game-high 16 points, adding nine rebounds and four blocks, while Luckett scored 14, knocking down a career-high four three-pointers. Ridgell scored 10, bringing her career total to 1,497 points, nine behind the school record set by head coach Sarah Condra (1999-04).
The Lady Bucs shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) for the game while holding UAH to 34.0 percent (18-of-53). UAH out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 41-25, including a 13-2 edge in offensive boards, but the Lady Bucs forced 20 UAH turnovers while committing 17.
The Lady Bucs wrap up the regular season with two home games. They celebrate Senior Day Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host North Alabama, and they finish the season by hosting No. 23 Union Thursday night at 5 p.m.
