Lady Hawks Sweep Lady Bucs

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-Shorter defeated the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 8-0 and 17-0 Friday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader that was moved from Memphis due to wintry weather.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Shorter (8-2, 3-2 GSC) pitcher Amanda Blanchard tossed a no-hitter as the Lady Hawks won the first game 8-0 in six innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Shorter struck first in the first inning with a run on a single, a stolen base and a pair of productive groundouts.
• Shorter tacked on three more runs in the third inning on two errors, a walk and two hits.
• The Lady Hawks scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth on a pair of home runs.
• Shorter set the final margin in the top of the sixth with a run on three singles.

KEY STATS:
• Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) and Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each drew walks for CBU (3-10, 1-4).

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Hawks scored four runs in the first and 12 in the third as they pulled away to a 17-0 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Shorter took advantage of three walks, an error, two singles and a double to plate four runs in the top of the first inning.
• The Lady Hawks scored once in the second inning on a single and an error.
• Shorter blew the game wide open with a 12-run third inning, taking advantage of nine hits, three errors and a pair of walks.

KEY STATS:
• Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) went 2-for-2.
• Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C./Pamlico HS), Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) and Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) each went 1-for-2.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs meet Shorter again Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. Their next home game is set for Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., when they host LeMoyne-Owen for a doubleheader.
