Bucs Celebrate Senior Day With 98-82 Win

MEMPHIS-Senior guard Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio, La Salle HS) scored a career-high 35 points and set the school records for steals in a game and career and senior guard Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio, La Salle HS) recorded his first triple-double as the Bucs rolled to a 98-82 win over North Alabama Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Canale Arena.

After a first half that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes, the Bucs (15-10, 12-9 GSC) opened the second half with a 17-1 run capped by a Charlie Oswald (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) three-point play that gave the Bucs a 57-43 lead with 15:35 remaining. The Lions (12-15, 9-12) never came closer than seven points again. After UNA trimmed the lead to 74-67 on a pair of Brandon Herman free throws with 6:07 to play, the Bucs answered with an 11-2 run to stretch their lead to 85-69 on a Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) jumper with 3:14 remaining, and the Lions never threatened again.

Casey went 13-of-20 from the floor and 5-of-9 from three-point range, also knocking down all four of his free throws. He added eight steals, eight rebounds and six assists, scoring 20 in the first half and 15 in the second. Casey tied his own school record with eight steals, matching the mark he set against West Alabama in December. With eight steals, he passed Kyle Couvion (2006-10) for first place on the career steals list with 197 to Couvion's 193. After missing a triple-double by just one rebound Thursday night, Fleming scored 14 points with 13 assists, a career-high 12 rebounds and just one turnover as he recorded the first triple-double of his career. Sall scored 20 points with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Oswald scored 15.

Calvin Dade paced the Lions with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Nathan Spehr scored 16, while Brandon Herman and John Fletcher scored 12 each.

The Bucs shot 57.8 percent (37-of-64) from the floor for the game, including 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from three-point range. UNA shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) for the game. The Bucs out-rebounded UNA 34-32. UNA held a 14-10 edge in offensive rebounds, but the Bucs forced 15 UNA turnovers while committing 11.

With the win, the Bucs remain a game out of fourth place heading into the final game of the regular season. Alabama-Huntsville and West Alabama are tied for first place at 15-6, with West Georgia second at 14-7. Shorter sits in fourth at 13-8, with CBU and Union tied for fifth at 12-9. Delta State is 11-10 in seventh, and North Alabama has clinched the No. 8 seed at 9-12. Saturday's results mean the Bucs will be on the road for the quarterfinals, as CBU could only tie Shorter for fourth and Shorter would win the tiebreaker.

The top four seeds will host the GSC quarterfinals Tuesday, March 3. The semifinals and finals will be played at the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University in Homewood, Ala., March 6-7.

The Bucs wrap up the regular season Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they host Union.
