Big Inning Carries Lady Bucs to Doubleheader Split

PENSACOLA, Fla.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs exploded for 10 runs in a 10-3 win at West Florida in the first game of Friday's doubleheader, but the Argos claimed a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (4-12, 2-6 GSC) scored seven runs in the top of the first inning as they cruised to a 10-3 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) was hit by a pitch, and walks to Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C./Pamlico HS) and Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) loaded the bases with none out. Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) followed with an RBI single, and Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) drove in another run when she reached on a fielder's choice, and the Argos were unable to get an out on the play. A wild pitch brought Steagall home, and Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) drew a walk to load the bases again. A wild pitch scored Provence, and Amy Koury (Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) reached on another fielder's choice with no out. Gonzalez capped the seven-run inning with a bases-clearing double.
• UWF (2-13, 1-7) scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a groundout and a double.
• The Lady Bucs added a run in the third. Gabriela Nodine (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) reached on an error and moved around to third on a pair of groundouts, scoring on a Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C./Pamlico HS) infield single to extend the lead to 8-1.
• CBU tacked on two more in the top of the sixth. Gonzalez reached on a single, and Ward reached on a three-base throwing error that scored Gonzalez from first. Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) drove Ward in with a groundout.
• UWF scored two of their own in the bottom of the sixth on a hit batter, an error and two singles.
• The Argos set the final margin with a run in the bottom of the seventh on an error and a double.

KEY STATS:
• Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
• Ward was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs, two RBI and two steals.
• Provece went 3-for-4 with a run, a double and an RBI.
• Steagall earned the win, allowing four runs, two earned, as she scattered eight hits and four walks over a complete game.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
A two-run fifth-inning homer by Jenna Belser lifted the Argos to a 2-1 win over the Lady Bucs in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU struck first in the top of the fourth inning. Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) led off with a single. Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) grounded into a force play, but she moved to second on a wild throw and scored on an Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) double to right-center. Ali Hare (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) followed with a bunt single and stole second, but a strikeout ended the threat.
• UWF answered in the bottom of the fifth, when Chelsy Krantz hit a one-out triple and scored on Belser's homer.

KEY STATS:
• Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
• Rosa-Ramon went 2-for-3.
• Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) took the loss, allowing two runs as she scattered eight hits and a walk over six innings with four strikeouts.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs face UWF again tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the rubber game of the series. CBU's next home game is next Saturday, Mach 7, when they host Delta State for a doubleheader.
