Big Innings Lift No. 21 Lions Past Lady Bucs

FLORENCE, Ala.-No. 21 North Alabama used a seven-run inning in each game to blow open what had been a pair of close games as they swept the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 10-1 and 10-2 Sunday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (4-18, 2-10 GSC) scored first and led 1-0 after an inning, but the Lions (19-4, 8-3) scored in their final four innings to pull away to a 10-1 win as UNA pitcher BreeAnna Blevins threw a one-hitter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs scored in the top of the first inning. Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) walked and moved to second when Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) grounded out. After a two-out walk to Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute), Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) laced a single to left to score Gonzalez. Sereika reached third but was tagged out diving back into the bag to end the inning.
• UNA converted a walk and a double into a tying run in the second inning, and they took 1 2-1 lead on a double and a single in the third.
• The Lions scored another run on a double and a single in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.
• UNA put it away in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs on a double, an error, four singles and a homer.

KEY STATS:
• Steagall went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk.
• Gonzalez worked a walk and scored a run.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Similarly to game one, the game was tied 2-2 in the fourth inning and the Lions led 3-2 after five before ending the game with a seven-run sixth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lions struck first with a run on a walk, a wild pitch, a single and a throwing error in the bottom of the first inning.
• UNA doubled its lead in the second inning with a run on two singles, a stolen base and a groundout.
• The Lady Bucs halved their deficit in the top of the third inning, when Gonzalez blasted a two-out solo homer to right-center.
• CBU tied the game in the top of the fourth with a run on back-to-back doubles by Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) and Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS), but Provence was tagged out returning to second base.
• The Lions used a single, a stolen base, a groundout and an infield single to score what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth.
• UNA ended the game with seven runs on an error and seven singles in the bottom of the sixth.

KEY STATS:
• Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
• Rosa-Ramon went 1-for-3.
• Provence was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
• Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C./Pamlico HS) went 1-for-2.
