Lady Bucs Split With Bethel

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a doubleheader against Bethel Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener 7-1 but dropping a 7-0 decision in game two.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (7-22) scored in five of their six innings to bat as they rolled to a 7-1 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU opened the scoring quickly in the first inning. Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) walked and moved to second on a Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) sacrifice bunt. She stole third and scored when the throw sailed up the third base line.
• Aggressive baserunning gave CBU two more runs in the second inning. Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) beat out an infield single and moved to second on a groundout. Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) singled, moving Gracia to third, and she stole second. Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C./Pamlico HS) reached on an infield single, bringing both runners home to give CBU a 3-0 lead.
• CBU scored another run in the bottom of the fourth. Gracia worked a one-out walk and went first to third on an Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) sacrifice bunt, scoring on a wild throw to third.
• Bethel (9-13) scored a run in the fifth on two singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.
• The Lady Bucs tacked on two in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gonzalez launched a one-out homer to center. Oyhenart followed with a double and scored on a Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) single.
• CBU set the final margin with a run in the sixth. Amy Koury (Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) walked and moved to second on a Gabrela Nodine sacrifice bunt. A Ward groundout moved her to third, and she scored on a wild pitch.

KEY STATS:
• Oyhenart went 2-for-2 with a double and a run.
• Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a homer, a walk, two runs and one RBI.
• Gracia went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
• Parsels went 1-for-2 with a run.
• Ward was 1-for-3 with two runs.
• Rosa-Ramon went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
• Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) went the distance for CBU, improving her record to 4-11 as she allowed one run on six hits and a walk. She struck out four in seven innings.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Bethel scored four unearned runs in the second inning to take control, and pitcher Kathryn Kreuziger threw a three-hit shutout to lift Bethel to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Wildcats took advantage of three CBU errors in the top of the second, scoring four runs on a walk, a double and a single.
• Bethel added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on two singles and a triple.
• Bethel set the final margin in the top of the seventh with a run on a single, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and another single.

KEY STATS:
• Parsels went 1-for-2 with a walk.
• Ward was 1-for-3.
• Gracia went 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
• Gonzalez was 0-for-1 but drew a walk and a hit by pitch and stole a base.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs hit the road for a GSC series at West Alabama this weekend. They play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 2 p.m. single game Sunday. Their next home game is Wednesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. as they host LeMoyne-Owen for a twin bill.
