Bucs Top Bulldogs 6-3 in Series Opener

JACKSON, Tenn.-The Christian Brothers University Bucs rapped out five doubles and two home runs as they claimed a 6-3 win at Union Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs (9-15, 4-11 GSC) opened the scoring with a three-run fourth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) and Cameron Coker (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) opened the scoring, but Coker was tagged out advancing on a Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) double. Cooley came around to score when Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) homered to center.
• The Bulldogs (5-27, 3-19) used three singles to plate a run in the bottom of the fourth.
• CBU added two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Cooley reached on an error and scored when Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit a two-run homer to right to give CBU a 5-1 edge.
• The Bucs added another run in the top of the eighth on doubles by Joe and Cooley.
• Union set the final margin with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a double and two singles.

KEY STATS:
• Cooley was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI.
• Joe went 2-for-5 with two runs and two doubles.
• Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) went 2-for-4.
• Blain Curtis (Atoka, Tenn./Tipton Rosemark Academy) was 2-for-5.
• Casey Goodwin went 1-for-4 with a run, a homer and two RBI.
• Caleb Goodwin went 1-for-4 with a run, a homer and two RBI.
• Peyton McArthur (Senatobia, Miss./Senatobia HS) earned the win, allowing one run as he scattered seven hits and four walks over seven innings.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs and Bulldogs meet for a 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. CBU's next home game is Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., when they host Delta State.
