KANSAS CITY, Mo.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of matches in the Rockhurst Volleyball Classic Friday, losing to the 17th-ranked hosts but defeating Henderson State in the nightcap.
MATCH 1:WHAT HAPPENED:No. 17 Rockhurst swept a three-set match from the Lady Bucs in the tournament opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:• The Hawks (4-1) jumped to a 17-4 lead in the first set on their way to a 25-10 win.
• Rockhurst scored the first five points as they pulled away to a 25-12 win in the second set.
• In the third set, the Hawks scored six straight to extend a 6-5 lead to 13-5, but CBU scored six of the next seven to trim the deficit to 14-11. The Hawks eventually pulled away to a 25-13 win to complete the sweep as they scored the final seven points.
KEY STATS:•
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led CBU with 13 kills, adding six digs.

Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) added eight kills and hit .375.
•
Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) collected 20 assists.
•
Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) garnered 10 digs.
MATCH 2:WHAT HAPPENED:The Lady Bucs swept Henderson State in a three-set match to even their record at 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:• The Lady Bucs survived a back-and-forth first set, trailing the Lady Reddies (1-6) as late as 24-23 before rallying to win 27-25.
• CBU again finished strong in the second set, trailing 21-19 before rattling off six straight points, including two aces by
Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS), to win 25-21.
• In the third set, the Lady Bucs used a 10-3 burst to take an 18-12 lead, and they held on to win 25-21 and complete the sweep.
KEY STATS:• Gillis rapped out 10 kills with a team-high eight digs.
• Reber dished out 25 assists with three aces and three blocks, and she hit .600 with a career-high seven kills.
• Cooper added eight kills as she hit .583.
WHAT'S NEXT:The Lady Bucs face Winona State tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and Oklahoma Baptist at 2:30 p.m. in the Rockhurst Volleyball Classic. Their next home match is Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they face Union.
