Lady Bucs Split Again at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-For the third time this season, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs dropped their first match Saturday before winning their second at the Rockhurst Volleyball Classic to remain .500 on the season.

MATCH 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Winona State (5-1) swept a three-set match from the Lady Bucs (3-3) in the morning match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After a back-and-forth start left Winona ahead 10-9, the Trojans scored 15 of the last 17 points to win the first set 25-11.
• In the second set the Warriors started strong, building a 17-6 lead on their way to a 25-12 win.
• The Warriors took control of the third set with an 11-2 run to open a 12-5 lead. The Lady Bucs battled back within three at 16-13 and 17-14 before Winona finished off a 25-20 win.

KEY STATS:
• Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led CBU with 10 kills to go with five digs.
• Lauren Hoffman (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) tacked on seven kills and six digs.
• Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had 18 assists, four kills and four digs.
• Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) garnered a match-high nine digs.

MATCH 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
After dropping the first set, the Lady Bucs rallied to win the next three as they claimed a four-set win over Oklahoma Baptist (4-5).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After CBU led as late as 19-18, the Lady Bison scored six straight points and won the set 25-20. 
• OBU scored the first five points of the second set, building an early 11-3 lead. The Lady Bucs used an 11-3 burst of their own to tie the set at 16, but OBU regained a 22-19 edge. CBU scored five straight to take a 24-22 lead, and they won the set 26-24 on an ace by Wong.
• In the third set, the Lady Bucs used a 7-0 run to build an 11-5 lead. After OBU battled back to tie the set at 17, 19 and 20, the Lady Bucs scored five of the last seven to win 25-22.
• An 11-3 burst in the middle of the fourth set gave the Lady Bucs a commanding 20-12 lead, and they held on to win 25-21 on a kill by Gillis.

KEY STATS:
• Gillis pounded 21 kills with 16 digs.
• Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) added 11 kills and three aces.
• Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) tacked on 10 kills with seven blocks.
• Nina Tuszynski (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley HS) set a career-high with 10 kills, hitting .348.
• Reber had 51 assists, 10 digs, seven kills and five blocks for CBU.
• Wong notched a team-high 17 digs.
• Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) collected 13 digs and three aces.
• Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS)added 13 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs open GSC play Tuesday night at 6 p.m. as they visit Shorter. Their next home match is Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Union.
