Lions Sweep Lady Bucs

MEMPHIS-Visiting North Alabama remained unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play as they swept a hard-fought three-set match from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lions (11-2, 5-0) never trailed in the first set, building leads of 11-6, 18-12 and 21-14. The Lady Bucs (5-7, 2-4) used a four-point run to close within 21-18, then cut the deficit to 24-23 before the Lions scored the last point to win the set 25-23.
• CBU led early in the second set, using a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 lead after a 7-all tie. The Lions answered with a 5-1 run of their own to tie the set at 13, and they used another 5-1 burst to take a 21-17 lead after a 16-all tie. CBU again trimmed the deficit to one at 23-22 before UNA scored the final two points to win 25-22.
• The third set again remained close throughout, tied as late as 14-14 and the Lady Bucs were within one point as late as 19-18 before the Lions scored six of the final eight points to win 25-20 and complete the sweep.

KEY STATS:
• Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs with 11 kills, nine digs and four blocks.
• Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) hit .350 with nine kills and three blocks.
• Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) hit .429 with eight kills and three blocks
• Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) collected eight digs.
• Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had 31 assists, seven digs and four kills.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs hit the road next weekend, visiting No. 17 West Florida Friday night at 6 p.m. and Valdosta State Saturday night at 6 p.m. Their next home match is Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they host Southern Arkansas at 6 p.m.
