Lady Bucs Split on Opening Day

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of matches in the CBU Invitational, falling to Lindenwood Saturday morning before holding off Bellarmine in a five-setter Saturday afternoon.

MATCH 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Lindenwood (4-0) swept a three-set match from the Lady Bucs (1-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU jumped to a 9-3 lead in the first set, but the Lady Lions out-scored them 22-11 the rest of the way to claim a 25-20 win.
• In the second set LU took the early lead, at 15-9, and they withstood several CBU rallies before winning 26-24.
• The Lady Lions hit .351 in the third set to complete the sweep with a 25-20 win.

KEY STATS:
• Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 18 kills, hitting .260 with 10 digs.
• Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) added 11 kills with a .450 hitting percentage.
• Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) led CBU with 15 digs.
• Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) dished out 30 assists with five kills.

MATCH 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs took control early with wins in the first two sets against Bellarmine (2-2) but had to rally in the fifth set to secure the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU jumped to a quick 11-6 lead that they never relinquished in a 25-18 first-set win in which they hit .333. 
• In set two, CBU hit .342 as they jumped to an 11-3 lead. They led by as many as 11 points at 20-9 before winning 25-19.
• The Knights built a 19-14 lead late in the third set. CBU rallied to tie the set at 22, but Bellarmine scored the final three points for a 25-22 win.
• Bellarmine again built an early lead in the fourth set, leading 13-6 before CBU scored 10 of the next 11 points to claim a 16-14 edge. CBU squandered a 24-21 advantage, eventually losing the set 27-25 to force a decisive fifth set.
• Both teams relinquished early leads in the fifth set. CBU took an early 5-2 edge before Bellarmine scored six straight to go ahead 8-5. CBU rallied from a 12-9 deficit to tie the set at 12 on a double-block by Reber and Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS). After the teams traded points, CBU claimed a 16-14 victory on anoterh double-block, this time by Miller and Nina Tuszynski (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley HS).

KEY STATS:
• Reber garnered career-highs of 56 assists and five blocks in the match, also notching five kills and a match-best five aces.
• Gillis logged a match-best 23 kills to go with 16 digs.
• Miller added 14 kills, hitting .333 with a match-high six blocks.
• Freshman Lauren Hoffman (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) added 11 kills and 12 digs.
• Wong racked up a career-high 30 digs with a pair of aces.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs play their next five matches on the road, beginning next weekend in the Rockhurst Classic in Kansas City, Mo. CBU plays Rockhurst and Wayne State Friday before facing Henderson State and Pittsburg State Saturday. CBU's next home match is Thursday, Sept. 17 as they host Union at 7 p.m.
