Lady Bucs Outlast Blazers in Five Sets

VALDOSTA, Ga.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs claimed a five-set win over host Valdosta State Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• In the opening set, the Lady Bucs (14-12, 9-7 GSC) jumped to a quick 6-1 lead, and they held a 13-8 lead before the Blazers (12-14, 8-8) used a 9-1 burst to take a 17-14 edge. The Blazers built a 23-18 lead before CBU used another 6-1 run to tie the set at 24, but the Blazers scored the final two to win 26-24.
• In the second set it was Valdosta who built an early lead at 11-6, building a 15-8 advantage before a CBU timeout. After the timeout, CBU scored four straight to close within 15-12, and another four-point burst brought the Lady Bucs to a 19-all tie on an Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) ace. Another four-point run capped by back-to-back Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) kill gave CBU a 24-22 lead, but again VSU rallied with a 4-1 run to take a 26-25 lead. After trading points, the Lady Bucs scored the final three to win 29-27 on a double-block by Mollie Wadsworth (Hernando, Miss./Northpoint Christian HS) and Gennah Schoen (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS).
• CBU used a six-point run to take an early 8-3 lead in the third set, and a 7-1 run extended the advantage to 18-8 as they went on to win 25-16.
• In the fourth set, VSU took an early 4-1 lead and never trailed, pulling away to a 15-6 advantage with a 7-0 run. The Blazers led by as many as 13 points before winning 25-14 to force a decisive fifth set.
• After a back-and-forth start to the fifth set, an Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) kill sparked a four-point run that gave CBU an 8-4 lead, and they never allowed the Blazers closer than three points again on their way to a 15-8 win.

• Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) looged 60 assists with 10 digs, three blocks and two aces.
• Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) racked up a match-best 18 kills to go with 10 digs and two aces.
• Miller hit .286 with 16 kills, eight blocks and five digs.
• Wadsworth had 12 kills and eight digs.
• Maurer notched 11 kills.
• Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) garnered a match-high 22 digs.
• Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) added 12 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs play their final regular season road match tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they visit West Florida. They wrap up the regular season next weekend as they host West Alabama Friday night at 7 p.m. and West Georgia Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
