NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Three freshmen combined for 44 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 72-64 win at Trevecca Nazarene Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Trojans (2-6) used a 13-0 run to open a 25-17 lead on a Jacob Williams triple with 7:48 remaining in the first half.
• CBU (4-2) stormed back with an 11-2 run to take a 28-27 edge on an
Alex Trentman (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart HS) three-pointer with 3:08 remaining in the half, and the Bucs would never trail by more than three points again.
• The Bucs took the lead back on their first basket of the second half, when a
Brad Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder HS) layup sparked what became a 13-5 run, capped by back-to-back
Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) buckets that gave CBU a 47-40 lead with 14:38 remaining.
• After a 9-2 Trojans run knotted the game at 49 on a Devin Whitfield three-pointer with 10:32 to play, back-to-back three-pointers by
Joe Laravie (Kettering, Ohio/Alter HS) and
Brad Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder HS) sparked a 16-6 run that gave CBU a 65-55 lead on a
Mitch Mays (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) layup with 3:12 remaining, and the Trojans never came closer than six in the final minutes.
KEY STATS:
• Dieball scored 19 points with six assists and four rebounds as he played all 40 minutes.
• Mays scored 18 with four rebounds and two assists as he shot 7-of-11 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.
• Laravie tacked on 16 with four rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
• Miller added 10 with four rebounds, shooting 4-of-6 overall including 2-of-4 from three-point range.
• The Bucs shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) for the game, including 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range. Trevecca shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) overall, including 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc.
• The Trojans out-rebounded CBU 33-28, including an 11-5 edge in offensive rebounds, but CBU forced 15 Trojan turnovers while committing 12.
