No. 3 Hawks Sweep Lady Bucs

ROME, Ga.-No. 3 Shorter swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Hawks (5-1, 2-0 GSC) scored two runs in the first inning, and pitcher Payton Lippert threw a two-hitter as Shorter won the first game 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Hawks gave Lippert all the run support she would need in the bottom of the first inning, scoring twice on two singles and a double.
• CBU (3-7, 0-2) halved the deficit in the top of the second. After Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) reached on an error, a Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) walk moved her to second. A passed ball moved them up to second and third, and Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) singled up the middle with one out to bring Seward home, but a pair of groundouts ended the threat.
• The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Shorter used a single, an error, a flyout and a groundout to scratch another run across.

KEY STATS:
• Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) went 1-for-3 with a third-inning double.
• Parsels was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
• Seward went 0-for-3 but reached on error twice and scored a run.
• Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) allowed three runs, two earned, as she scattered eight hits against two walks in six innings.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Hawks scored multiple runs in four of six innings as they pulled away to a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Shorter opened the scoring with two runs in the second on two singles and a double.
• The Hawks doubled their lead in the fourth with two runs on a walk and three singles.
• Shorter extended its lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with two runs on three singles and a sacrifice bunt.
• CBU shaved a run off the deficit in the top of the sixth. Hannah Oliver (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) led off with a single up the middle, and Blake Andres (Arlington, Tenn./Briarcrest HS) followed with an infield single. After a double-steal brought them to second and third, Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) drove Oliver in with a groundout.
• The Hawks ended the game with a three-run sixth, taking advantage of two walks, a triple and a sacrifice fly.

KEY STATS:
• Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) went 2-for-3.
• Andres was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
• Seward went 1-for-3 with a double.
• Oliver was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs meet the Hawks again tomorrow at noon. Their next home game is set for Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Maryville (Mo.) for a doubleheader.
