No. 6 Blazers Sweep CBU 9-0, 11-3

VALDOSTA, Ga.-No. 6 Valdosta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday at Steels Diamond.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Valdosta hit four home runs and pitcher Caitlin Calhoun struck out 12 in a three-hit shutout as the Blazers won 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• VSU (11-3-1, 3-2 GSC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Brandy Morgan hit a two-run homer.
• The Blazers scored two more in the third inning on a Hayley Cruthers two-run shot.
• Valdosta added three runs to its lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Heather Robinson leadoff homer as well as an error, a double and an illegal pitch.
• Kiley Rusen set the final margin in the bottom of the sixth when she hit a two-run homer.

KEY STATS:
• Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) went 2-for-2 for the Lady Bucs.
• Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) was 1-for-2.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
VSU scored in four of their five innings as they won 11-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Blazers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of three walks, a single and a double.
• Rusen extended the Valdosta lead to 6-0 when she hit a two-run homer in the second inning.
• The Lady Bucs (3-10, 0-5) got on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally. Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) worked a two-out walk and moved to second on a Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) single to left. Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) hit an RBI double to left, scoring Welch.
• The Blazers added three runs to their lead in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a leadoff homer by Morgan as well as two more runs on an error, a single and a double.
• CBU scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) hit a leadoff single. Pinch-runner Amy Koury (Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) scored on a throwing error after an Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) single up the middle. After moving to third on the error, Parsels scored on a Blake Andres (Arlington, Tenn./Briarcrest HS) squeeze bunt.
• The Blazers ended the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a walk, a single and a double.

KEY STATS:
• Oyhenart went 2-for-3.
• Johnson was 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI.
• Parsels was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
• Steagall went 1-for-3.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs meet VSU again Sunday at noon. Their next home game is set for Wednesday afternoon as they host LeMoyne-Owen in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
