Argos Top Lady Bucs Twice

MEMPHIS-Visiting West Florida swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon, winning 11-4 in the opener before eking out a 2-1 extra-inning win in the nightcap.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Argos (25-11, 12-8 GSC) scored four runs in the first and six in the sixth to claim an 11-4 win in the series opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UWF used a walk, three doubles, a single and an error to plate four runs in the top of the first.
• The Lady Bucs (6-29, 2-18) shaved a run off the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) reached on an error, and she scored on an Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) double.
• The Argos answered with a run in the top of the fifth on a single, an error and a double.
• The Lady Bucs pulled within a run with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) and Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) singled, and a Welch walk loaded the bases with one out. With two away, Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) hit a two-run single, and Johnson followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-4.
• The Argos plated six runs in the top of the sixth on three singles, two walks, a hit batter and two errors.

KEY STATS:
• Seward went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run.
• Johnson was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
• Welch went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
After five scoreless innings, both teams scored in the sixth, and the Argos scored the winning run in the top of the eighth to claim the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UWF opened the scoring in the top of the sixth with a run on back-to-back one-out doubles.
• The Lady Bucs equalized in the bottom of the sixth. Seward walked and moved to second on a wild pitch, scoring when Welch hit a two-out single up the middle.
