Reddies Sweep Lady Bucs

MEMPHIS-Visiting Henderson State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Tuesday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Reddies (11-13) scored the first seven runs and never allowed CBU (6-18) closer than six as they rolled to a 13-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• HSU plated five runs in the first inning on three singles, a double and a homer.
• The Reddies added two more runs to their lead in the third inning on a walk, three errors and three singles.
• The Lady Bucs broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) led off with a single, but pinch-runner Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) was tagged out trying to move to third on an Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) single. Hannah Oliver (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) followed with a single to move Seward to second. After Seward was erased when Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) grounded into a force play, Oliver stole third and scored while the Reddie defense tried to tag Welch out at first base.
• HSU scored four more in the top of the fifth on four singles, two doubles and an error, taking an 11-1 edge.
• CBU kept the game alive with a three-run fifth inning. Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) started the rally with a one-out single, and singles by Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) and Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) loaded the bases. Beckman followed with a two-run single up the middle, and Johnson scored on a wild throw when Seward grounded into a force play.
• The Reddies set the final margin in the top of the sixth when Alexis Morton hit a two-run homer to left after a two-out walk.

KEY STATS:
• Nine different Lady Bucs collected one single each in the game.
• Sereika, Cotter and Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) each went 1-for-1.
• Oliver, Steagall and Seward were 1-for-2, with Oliver adding a stolen base, a sacrifice and a run.
• Oyhenart and Johnson each went 1-for-3 with a run, while Oyhenart stole a base.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Reddies scored three two out runs in the top of the sixth as they claimed a 7-4 victory in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Johnson legged out a bunt single and took second before time was called after the play. After stealing third, she scored on a Steagall groundout.
• The Reddies answered with two runs in the third inning on three walks, a hit batter and a single.
• CBU regained the lead with a three-run bottom of the third. Parsels led off with a single and moved to third on a fielding error after Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) singled to right. After Parsels stole home on a double-steal, Oyhenart sacrificed Ferreira to third. Johnson reached on an infield single, and both scored when Sereika reached on a two-out fielding error.
• The Reddies tied the game in the top of the fifth with two runs on two singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly.
• HSU regained the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. After the first two batters lined out, HSU used a walk and back-to-back home runs by Ashlyn White and Keirsten Seahorn to take a 7-4 lead.
• CBU was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, and the game was called due to darkness after six innings.

KEY STATS:
• Johnson was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs.
• Parsels was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run.
• Ferreira went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action this weekend as they face West Alabama in a GSC series. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are both set for 1 p.m. starts.
