Hawks Sweep Bucs in Final Doubleheader

ROME, Ga.-Host Shorter rallied for a 6-3 win in the first game and they claimed an 8-1 win in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Hawks (16-32, 8-24 GSC) scored the game's final five runs after CBU (9-37, 1-31) had taken a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning as they claimed a 6-3 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs scored first in the top of the third inning. Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on an error and moved to second on another error. After moving to third on a Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) flyout, he scored on a Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) infield single.
• The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out solo homer by Blaze Vazquez.
• CBU regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Nick Traylor (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led off with a single to right. A Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) single and a Goodwin hit by pitch loaded the bases for Dodd, who hit a two-run single to center to break the tie.
• Shorter tied the game back up in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on two walks, an error and a pair of singles.
• The Hawks took the lead for good with a run in the sixth on a double and a single.
• Shorter set the final margin with two runs in the eighth on three singles.

KEY STATS:
• Dodd went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
• Traylor was 2-for-4.
• Castleberry went 1-for-5 with a run.
• Goodwin was 1-for-3 and was hit by pitch twice.
• Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) went 1-for-4.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Hawks scored in four of the game's first five innings as they built an 8-0 lead en route to an 8-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Hawks struck first with a run in the bottom of the first on a double, a balk and an error.
• Shorter added three runs in the third inning on two singles, a double and a triple.
• The Hawks extended their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning on a hit batter, a single and a three-run homer by Patrick Sanderson.
• Shorter added a run in the fifth on a walk, a groundout and a single.
• The Bucs broke through for a run in the top of the sixth. Castleberry drew a one-out walk. After moving to second on a dropped third strike and third on a passed ball, he scored when Christian Halterman (Dyersburg, Tenn./Dyer County HS) reached on an error.

KEY STATS:
• Castleberry went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.
• Goodwin was 1-for-2.
• Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) went 1-for-3.
• Andrew Miller (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) was 1-for-3.
• Josh Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) went 1-for-4.
• Ryan Abone (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) threw a scoreless inning of relief.

The Bucs wrap up their 2016 season with a noon game tomorrow at Shorter.
