Lady Bucs Start 2-0

MEMPHIS-After dropping their first set of the season Friday morning, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won their remaining six as they clinched wins over Barton and Southwest Baptist in the season-opening Christian Brothers University Invitational.

MATCH 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Behind a career-high 10 blocks from Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS), the Lady Bucs (2-0) won three straight sets after conceding the opener against Barton (0-1), winning in four sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bulldogs survived a nip-and-tuck first set in which neither team led by more than four points. Barton seized control with a 7-1 run to take a 16-12 lead on a Hayley Marshburn kill. CBU rallied within one point three times late in the set, but the Bulldogs took a 25-22 win.
• In the second set, CBU used a four-point run to take a 9-5 lead they would not relinquish. Barton came within a single point four times, as late as 16-15, but a five-point run gave the Lady Bucs a 23-16 lead and they held on for a 25-19 win.
• After a back-and-forth start in the third set, CBU used a 14-5 run to take a 22-14 lead on a double-block by Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) and Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS), holding on for a 25-17 win.
• CBU exploded for early leads of 11-4, 17-7 and 20-9 in the fourth set, and they held on for a 25-22 win to seal the victory.

KEY STATS:
• Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) led the Lady Bucs with 18 kills and 21 points in her college debut, adding eight digs, three blocks and an ace for 21 points.
• Cooper hit .417 with 12 kills, five digs, three blocks and a pair of aces.
• Miller notched three solo blocks with seven block assists for a total of 10 blocks.
• Reber dished out 29 assists with 11 digs, three blocks and two aces.
• Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) logged a match-best 19 digs.

MATCH 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Lenoir posted team-highs of 11 kills and 16 digs to lead the Lady Bucs to a three set sweep over Southwest Baptist (0-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU scored 13 of the final 18 points to pull away to a 25-16 win in the first set after battling to an early 12-11 lead.
• The second set was nip-and-tuck throughout, with no lead of more than four points. The Bearcats opened a 19-15 lead, but a Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) ace was part of a four-point run that brought CBU back to tie at 19. After the teams traded points, CBU used a three-point run to take a 24-23 lead on a Lenoir kill. The Bearcats answered with two to take a 25-24 lead, but the Lady Bucs scored the final three to take a 27-25 win on a Mollie Wadsworth (Hernando, Miss./Northpoint Christian HS) kill.
• The Lady Bucs used a nine-point run with Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) serving to flip the third set as they turned a 20-15 deficit into a 24-20 lead, before clinching the sweep on an attack error for a 25-21 win.

KEY STATS:
• Lenoir added a block and an assist to her team-highs of 11 kills, 16 digs and 11.5 points.
• Cooper hit .438 with seven kills, four blocks and two aces for 11 points.
• Wadsworth rapped out seven kills.
• Clausen notched 10 digs and four aces.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs play two more matches Saturday in the CBU Invitational. They open Saturday's schedule at 8 a.m. as they take on Saint Joseph's, and they wrap up tournament action at 7:15 p.m. against Arkansas Tech.
