Lady Bucs' Block Party Leads to Two Wins

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs racked up 31 blocks Saturday as they claimed a four-set win over Saint Joseph's and a five-set win over Arkansas Tech to finish unbeaten in the season-opening CBU Invitational.

MATCH 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs racked up their fourth-most block in a match in school history, the most since the NCAA changed to 25-point sets in 2008, as they defeated Saint Joseph's (0-3) in four sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Pumas claimed a 25-21 win in a back-and-forth first set that saw 14 ties and eight lead changes. SJC scored seven of the last nine points after CBU had rallied for a 19-18 lead.
• CBU jumped to a 12-5 lead in the second set and led the rest of the way. After the Pumas cut the deficit to 15-14, CBU used a 6-1 run to take a 21-15 lead on a Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) ace, and they pulled away to a 25-18 final score.
• In the third set, the Lady Bucs broke an 11-all tie with a 9-2 run to open a 20-13 lead, eventually winning 25-17 on a Nina Tuszynski (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley HS) kill.
• The Lady Bucs' blocking exploded in the fourth set. CBU racked up eight blocks during a 13-1 start to the set, capped by a double-block by Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) and Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy). At one point, the Lady Bucs scored on five consecutive blocks. They never allowed SJC closer than six points again as they cruised to a 25-13 win to seal the match.

KEY STATS:
• Miller matched her career-high, set yesterday, with 10 blocks to go with six kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
• Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) added seven blocks with five kills, hitting .385.
• Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) logged eight blocks with six aces, tied for second-most in a four-set match in school history behind Alison Welch (Sept. 6, 2013 vs. Southern Arkansas).
• Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had 29 assists, nine digs, four blocks and four kills.
• Mollie Wadsworth (Hernando, Miss./Northpoint Christian HS) added seven kills, four blocks and four digs.
• Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) tacked on eight kills.
• Clausen notched 12 digs.

NOTABLE:
• The Lady Bucs' 19 total blocks rank second in school history for a four-set match and fourth in school history overall. The overall record is 22.5 in a five-set loss to Harding Sept. 12, 2006, while the four-set record is 19.5 in a loss to Arkansas Tech Oct. 2, 2007. The top three matches in total blocks were in the era of 30-point sets.

MATCH 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs added 12 more blocks as they outlasted Arkansas Tech (2-2) in a five-set marathon in the final match of the CBU Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs hit .419 in the opening set, led by seven kills in 14 tries by Lenoir, as they cruised to a 25-13 win. CBU took control with a 9-2 run after the set had been tied at five, and they never allowed ATU closer than five points again.
• CBU jumped to a quick 11-4 lead in the second set, but the Golden Suns answered with an 11-2 run to take a 17-15 edge they would never relinquish in a 25-20 win.
• In the third set, CBU used a 6-1 burst to take a 13-8 lead on a double-block by Miller and Reber. The Golden Suns drew within one point four times, as late as 23-22, before a Maurer kill and a Clausen ace clinched a 25-22 win in the set.
• In set four, the Golden Suns built leads of 10-5 and 17-9 en route to a 25-15 win to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
• The Lady Bucs scored four straight, including back-to-back blocks by Miller, to take a 6-3 edge in the fifth set. After ATU scored three in a row to tie it at six, CBU used a 5-1 run to take an 11-7 lead on a Lenoir kill. Again ATU rallied within a point, at 11-10 and 13-12, before a Cooper kill and a double-block by Miller and Reber delivered the Lady Bucs a 15-12 win.
