Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn., East Hamilton HS) pounded 23 kills to lead the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs swept visiting Valdosta State in three sets Friday night.
CBU 3, Valdosta State 0 (25-17, 25-21, 27-25):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (9-10, 4-3 GSC) never trailed in the first set, hitting .429 as they pulled away to a 25-17 win despite never scoring more than three consecutive points.
• VSU (8-7. 3-3) jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the second set, but CBU answered with a 5-1 run to tie, then a four-point burst to take a 9-7 lead on an
Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) kill to force a Blazer timeout. After the Blazers rallied for an 11-9 lead, CBU answered with a 7-1 run to take a 16-12 lead they would not relinquish on a Lenoir kill. They built their lead to as many as six points at 20-14 before holding on for a 25-21 win.
• CBU jumped to a commanding 8-2 lead in the third set on a red card, three attack errors, an ace and four kills. The Blazers whittled away at the lead, coming within a point at 19-18 then rallying from a 24-21 deficit to spoil match point by scoring three straight. CBU regained a 26-25 edge on an
Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) kill, and an attack error scored match point for CBU.
KEY STATS:
• Lenoir hit .318 with match-highs of 23 kills, 14 digs and three aces, racking up 26.5 points in the process. Her 23 kills mark a career-high for a three-set match.
• Miller hit .350 with eight kills and four blocks for 10.5 points.
• Maurer hit .280 with nine kills and a block.
