JACKSON, Tennessee-Junior forward
Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio, Lakota East HS) scored 23 of his game-high 30 points in the second half to lead the No. 8/6 Christian Brothers University Bucs to an 86-79 win at Union Monday night as they moved to 11-0, coming within one game of matching the best start in school history.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The teams traded scores throughout the first half in a game that saw 11 ties, 18 lead changes and no lead of more than four points in the game's first 30 minutes.
• CBU (11-0, 3-0 GSC) used a quick 6-0 burst to take a 46-42 lead on a Dieball three-point play with 16:35 remaining in the game.
• The Bulldogs (6-5, 0-3 GSC) made seven straight three-pointers over a seven-minute span of the second half. It started with a Tyree Boykin triple with 16:52 remaining in the game. After Boykin made four more, Nick Velasquez capped the stretch with his second triple of the streak to give Union a 6257 lead with 9:43 remaining.
• Dieball started the Bucs' answer with a layup. After a Union free throw,
Joe Laravie (Kettering, Ohio/Alter HS) scored eight points in 14 seconds to give the Bucs a 67-63 lead they would not relinquish. After Laravie started the burst with a triple with 9:20 remaining, he picked up a steal at halfcourt, drawing a foul as he made the a fastbreak reverse layup. He missed the free throw, but
Cody Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) grabbed the rebound, and
Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) found Laravie in the corner for another triple.
• After Union trimmed the lead to one, CBU used a 12-3 run to extend their lead to double digits at 79-69 on a pair of
Brad Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder HS) free throws with 3:33 remaining, and Union never came closer than six points again despite two more threes by Boykin, who finished with a GSC season-high nine threes on 11 attempts for 27 points.
