Tritons Spoil Strong CBU Start, 67-50

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs led for most of the first half, but visiting Eckerd closed the half on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good as they pulled away to a 67-50 win over the Lady Bucs Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The teams traded leads nine times in the first stanza, with neither team leading by more than two points.
• The Lady Bucs (2-5) opened the second quarter with four straight points to take a 16-13 lead on a pair of Makayla Enochs (Finley, Tenn./Dyer County HS) free throws with 8:18 remaining in the quarter.
• Eckerd (8-1) answered with a 10-0 run featuring three straight three-pointers and capped by a Kacie Juday free throw with 3:00 remaining in the half to give them a 25-18 lead. Juday's layup in the final seconds of the first half capped what became a 15-4 run and gave the Tritons a 30-22 lead at the intermission.
• A Mikaela Blissett (Oran, Mo./Scott County Central HS) free throw was the only score in nearly three minutes to start the second half, but the Tritons eventually answered with a 15-3 run to extend their lead to 45-26 on a Chelsea Johnson triple with 3:13 remaining.
• A 6-0 burst early in the fourth extended Eckerd's lead to 53-31, their largest of the night, on an Armi Anttila layup with 8:27 remaining.
• CBU answered with a 13-5 run to close within 58-44 on back-to-back layups by Rafaella Angelidou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Aristoteleio Kollegeio) with 4:10 remaining, but they were unable to come any closer.

KEY STATS:
• Angelidou led the Lady Bucs with 13 points, adding five rebounds in 32 minutes.
• Blissett turned in her third straight double-digit scoring game with 10 points and eight rebounds in 29 minutes.
Kenzie Jones (Park Hills, Mo./Central HS) scored 10 with four assists.
Brynne Lytle (Jackson, Tenn./Trinity Christian Academy) tacked on seven with six rebounds.
• The Lady Bucs shot just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) overall, including 17.9 percent (5-of-28) from three-point range. Eckerd finished 56.8 percent (25-of-44), including 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc.
• The Tritons out-rebounded CBU 34-29, but the Lady Bucs held a 14-7 edge in offensive rebounds and forced 20 Eckerd turnovers while committing 13.

HEAD COACH SARAH CONDRA'S THOUGHTS:
"That's a really good basketball team. You feel like you're playing pretty decent and you make one or two small mistakes, and they're just really good at taking advantage of those mistakes. There were a couple of times where we were flat defensively as far as our positioning, and they had a quick swing and all of a sudden it's a wide open three. I look up in the second half and how did we get down 18 already? It just snowballed. "

"They shot the ball really well, and we didn't. 56 percent for them and 29 percent for us. You don't win many ballgames like that. Part of the problem was, we didn't run our offense very well. One of the big keys was flowing offense. Usually a really good team doesn't let you get your first option. A lot of times they take away your second option, so you have to flow it and try to get your third and fourth option. We just cut things off and did a lot of one-on-one stuff tonight, and took a lot of shots that aren't things that we normally practice."

On Mikaela Blissett:
"At Delta she was one rebound away from a double double and then had the double double at Mississippi College. Misses it by two rebounds tonight. She just plays solid and she plays extremely hard. You need a workhorse like that. She's playing like a woman possessed right now, and you need some of that. I'm really proud of her, and hopefully she can continue playing so well."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs play their final non-conference game Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. when they visit Harding. Their next home game will be Tuesday, Jan. 2, when they host Auburn-Montgomery at 5 p.m.
