No. 11 Lady Blazers Sweep CBU

MEMPHIS-No. 11 Valdosta State swept the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs by identical 12-1 scores in the first doubleheader of the Gulf South Conference schedule for both schools Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Blazers (11-2, 2-0 GSC) scored two runs in three innings and five in the seventh to pull away to a 12-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• VSU opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on two singles and a sacrifice fly.
• The Lady Blazers extended their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the third on two doubles and two singles.
• VSU used a triple and a two-run homer by Chelsea Canara to build their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning.
• The Lady Bucs (2-8, 0-2) broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) blasted a two-out triple to right, and she scored when Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) singled down the third base line.
• The Lady Blazers added two more runs to their lead in the top of the sixth on two doubles, two walks and a hit batter.
• VSU blew it open with a five-run seventh on two singles, two doubles, two errors and a home run.

KEY STATS:
• Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) went 2-for-4.
• Seward was 1-for- with a hit by pitch, a double and a run.
• Ferreira went 1-for-2.
• Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) was 1-for-3 with a double.
• Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) went 1-for-3.
• Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) was 1-for-3.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
VSU scored twice in the first, third and fifth innings and six times in the second to take a 12-1 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• VSU agains truck first with a pair of runs int he top of the first on a single and a two-out Hayley Cruthers homer.
• The Lady Bucs halved the deficit in the bottom of the inning. Oyhenart worked a one-out walk. After moving to second on a groundout, she scored on a Steagall single to right.
• The Lady Blazers took a commanding lead with a six-run second inning on three singles, a double, a homer, a hit batter,  walk and an error.
• VSU added two more in the third on a walk, a hit batter and two singles.
• The Lady Blazers set the final margin with two more in the top of the fifth on two singles, an error and an RBI groundout.

KEY STATS:
• Steagall went 2-for-2 with one RBI.
• Welch was 2-for-3 with a double.
• Seward went 1-for-2.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they meet Valdosta State for the final game of the three-game series.
