MEMPHIS-Christian Brothers University pitchers and threw consecutive shutouts as the Lady Bucs swept visiting Missouri Baptist 3-0 and 1-0 Friday afternoon.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (4-9) scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 3-0 win over Missouri Baptist (0-2) in the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
•
Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left, and she scored on a throwing error when Schassburger laid down a sacrifice bunt.
• In the fifth,
Blake Andres (Arlington, Tenn./Briarcrest HS) and
Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) opened the inning with a pair of singles. After
Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) sacrificed them to second and third, a wild pitch brought Andres home and Ferreira to third, and Ferreira stole home on a delayed steal to set the final margin.
KEY STATS:
• Cotter threw a three-hit shutout, allowing one hit batter against three strikeouts, throwing just 65 pitches.
• Andres went 2-for-2 with a run.
• Steagall was 2-for-3 with a run.
• Ferreira was 1-for-1 with a run and a stolen base.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Schassburger faced just two over the minimum, pitching around a pair of singles for her second shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs gave Schassburger (2-4) her run support in the bottom of the first. Welch reached on an error to start the inning. She stole second and scored on an error as the throw sailed into centerfield.
• Schassburger mowed down the first 11 batters she faced before allowing a two-out single in the top of the fourth. An error on that play moved the runner to third, but she induced a groundout to escape the threat.
• MBU's only other baserunner against Schassburger came in the top of the sixth with a one-out single, but she used a groundout and a lineout to preserve the shutout.
KEY STATS:
• Schassburger struck out three against two singles as she needed just 67 pitches for the shutout.
•
Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) was 1-for-2 with a walk.
•
Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases.
• Andres was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice.
•
Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) went 1-for-3.
