Lady Bucs Open With Two Wins

ALEXANDRIA, La.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs opened the season with a pair of wins in the LSU-Alexandria Mardi Gras Tournament Friday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Julia Schassburger (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central HS) threw a two-hit shutout to lead the Lady Bucs to a 2-0 win over Central Baptist (0-2) in the first game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs gave Schassburger all the offense she would need in the top of the first. Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) and Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) reached on back-to-back one-out singles, and Oyhenart scored on an error on a double-steal.
• CBU tacked on another run in the top of the third inning. Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) hit a one-out single. After moving to third on a groundout, she scored on an error after Welch stole second.
• The Mustangs' first hit came with two out in the fourth inning, and they also picked up a two-out single in the sixth.

KEY STATS:
• Schassburger tossed the shutout with just two hits, striking out two with no walks. She also went 1-for-2 with a walk.
• Welch was 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and a hit by pitch.
• Johnson went 2-for-4 with a run.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs scored four runs in the last three innings as they rallied for a 5-2 win over host LSU-Alexandria (1-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs again scored an unearned run in the first inning. Oyhenart reached on an error, and Welch followed with a single. After they moved to second and third on a wild pitch, Oyhenart scored on a Schassburger sacrifice fly.
• The Generals took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a single, a double and two walks.
• The Lady Bucs tied the game in the top of the fifth. Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) reached on a one-out error. After she moved to second on an Oyhenart walk, Ferreira scored on a Welch single.
• CBU regained the lead for good in the top of the sixth. Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) reached on a one-out bunt single and moved to second on a two-out pinch-hit single by Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS). Johnson followed with a single to left-center to score Parsels.
• The Lady BUcs added two more runs to their lead in the seventh inning. Oyhenart led off with a single, and Welch reached on an error. After Schassburger sacrificed them to second and third, a two-out single by Toni Rizzo (St. Rose, La./John Curtis Christian) scored both to set the final margin.

KEY STATS:
• Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) earned the win as she threw a complete game, allowing two runs as she scattered five hits and three walks against three strikeouts.
• Welch went 2-for-4 with a run, a stolen base and one RBI.
• Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run.
• Oyhenart went 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs.
• Rizzo was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and two RBI.
• Schassburger was 1-for-1 with a walk, a sacrifice and one RBI.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs play two more games in the LSU-Alexandria Mardi Gras Tournament tomorrow, facing Central Baptist at 11 a.m. and LSU-Alexandria at 1 p.m. Their home opener is set for Saturday, Feb. 18, when they host Valdosta State at 1 p.m.
